The booklet originates from a lecture given by Eugene M. Schwartz at the New York Cultural Center in 1970. Schwartz explains his art of collecting art in how-to-do-it steps — How to get started? How to deal with art dealers? How to develop a “great eye”? — with the least possible money, eventually building a worthwhile collection of the best art that will never die. 
 
Eugene M. Schwartz (1927 - 1995) was a copywriter and author of several successful books on advertising. Together with his wife Barbara Schwartz, they assembled one of the leading collections of contemporary art in the United States at the time. They generously donated hundreds of important works from their collection to institutions in the USA.

Confessions of a Poor Collector has inspired Thomas Geiger for his book Collection for the Poor Collector, in which he writes about contemporary artworks venturing outside of the art market. Traditional Chinese editions of both titles are co-published by nos:books and Edition Taube.
